I went to college after high school, then became the wife of an Army helicopter pilot. I have to say that I loved military life as a child, then again as an adult. From a different perspective, of course. The Army sent us to new places and to some old, familiar places. Although we loved living in Hawaii for 3 years, Germany seemed to be our 2nd home after 2 3-year tours for our family.

After all the moving and kids growing up, I finally had time to do something other than military life. I decided to be a 1st grade teacher and a K-5 reading specialist. It was an interesting and never dull 24 years. Since I've been retired, I have returned to my 2nd home, Germany. Each trip, I stayed for 3 weeks, rented a car, and had my own itinerary. On those trips, I revisited some of the places where I had lived as a child or as an adult. What a change, the Germans remodeled the housing areas for the better.
I felt that the cities were still beautiful, and it was easy to stop at a Gastehaus for something to eat and a glass of wine or beer to drink. On one trip, my now adult daughter came with me to see where she was born. She fell in love with Wurzburg and liked the way "her" hospital looked. Beautiful condo-type apartments with flowers and lots of grass everywhere. We both had a wonderful time. Now she wants us all to return so she can show her husband and 2 sons where she was born.

The dreaded question...Where are you from?

Born in PA but don't claim it as my home. i'm from lots of different places as are the rest of us.

Do you have a favorite place where you ever lived? What made it special to you?

Germany was my favorite. I can't pick just one of the 5 different locations that I lived in. Each overseas tour came at different times in my life, 2 as a child and 2 as an adult. Even though we were in Hawaii for a 3-year tour, 1977-1980, I can say that 12 years in Germany beats Hawaii for me. Being there as a child, 3-6 years old, and living on the economy in Munich was my first experience in a foreign location. I had a few German friends, including our housekeeper. Toni took me with her almost everywhere when she shopped for groceries, on her bicycle, of course. I spoke fluent German. The local shopkeepers did not believe that I was an American child. The house we lived in was very comfortable, with a good sized grassy yard.
Two things that made this time in Munich special for me were, in winter, having my own ice skating rink that Dad made for me in our yard, and summer overnight camping in the backyard in Dad's pup tent. - I loved it as a kindergartener; it was a fun thing to do, having a midnight snack and sleeping in Dad's Army tent. Mom was not a camper, so she had a comfortable night in the house.
Such an idyllic life in the early to mid-1950s.

Have you been back to visit any place you lived growing up overseas?

Yes, when we were in Munich in the late 1970s, we drove through the city and the part where I had lived 20 years earlier. The house was still there, at the same address, but the property had been divided, making room for another house. The big yard where I would ice skate on my own rink in the winter was gone. It was still a nice-looking neighborhood, only a bit more crowded. The large yards were no longer there.

Did you live (not just visit) in...
