I have worked many jobs from grocery store, truck driver, investment broker, real estate broker/investor, math teacher, just to name a few.

I have traveled as much as I can. In 2019 The Wife and I were able to go to Normandy on June 6 at Utah Beach for the 75th anniversary of D-day. I got to visit my old haunts in Munich also. The last 17 years a lot of the travel has been by motorcycle (300,000+ miles). In 2019 I rode to the Arctic Ocean. My first motorcycle (145,000 miles) took me to 49 states and all Canadian provinces/territories with roads except Newfoundland/Labrador. I broke my leg in Nova Scotia the day before the ferry ride to Newfoundland.
I did make it to Newfoundland/Labrador on my motorcycle via the Trans Labrador Highway a few years later..

The Iron Butt Association is a long distance motorcycle group that I belong to. I have 51 of their rides certified. I earned the Mile Eater Gold and two Mile Eater Silver. Look up the IBA.

The Wife does not ride but we do travel a lot together by car.

School Story

January of my senior year we arrived in K-town. However, people arriving from France after de Gaulle kicked out the US had housing priority over my low ranking dad. However, I had already enrolled at KAHS when we were given quarters in Baumholder, an hour away back then. My dad remained assigned to K-town. I attended KAHS 3 days. Since Baumholder was "temporary" I was advised to stay enrolled at KAHS and a bus would pick me up every morning at 0700 to take me to KAHS. Plus I knew on girl before I got there and met some more the weekend before I enrolled. I wanted to stay at KAHS.
It was January and I just left Oklahoma. After two mornings of waiting in the wonderful January snow and below zero temps in Baumholder for over an hour looking for the military bus that never came I was ready to quit school.
I do believe this experience is what made me decide the army was not for me.
My sister was visiting, my mother was sick, but mother ordered my sister to take my butt up the hill from our quarters near the railroad track and enroll me in BAHS the next school day. That started my second semester of my senior year, now at BAHS. It was really a great experience. I am thankful it happened the way it did.

I enrolled at BAHS the next week. It actually turned out well for me. I got a job right away working for the European Exchange System, bought a car, and made friends the first day. The summer after graduation I drove truck for EES.

I know it is often called the "arm pit" but I liked it. Of course I did make the most of my stay there and I was an 18 year old dependent thus not in the military. I had fun.

My family was moved back to K-town the summer after graduation and I went to U of Maryland, Munich Campus. A whole new great experience.
I worked for the Commissary warehouse, butcher shop, and what ever else they told me to do. I lived in Dickson Hall for a short time. My dad was transferred to the Munich area so I became a townie with my car and job. That was two years of an education no one can put a price tag on. I traveled through out most of western Europe. A buddy and I took a road trip to Athens from Munich via Yugoslavia. Fantastic trip. Another to England via the ferry. Many ski trips in Germany and Austria.

When and where were you a brat outside the United States?

1967 K-town HS for 3 days, 1967 Baumholder graduated 1967, 1967-1969 University of Maryland, Munich Campus

Have you been to a Gathering or Homecoming?

Yes

Do you have a memory that could have only happened because of where you were?

Many, Many, Many

We were in Germany less than 3 year but lived in 5 quarters in 3 towns.

I learned to embrace other cultures. There are a lot of good people everywhere, and some A holes.

My dad was a very low ranking NCO so I needed a job to continue my life style I had in the US. I got a job as soon as I arrived in Baumholder and another one in Munich. I was fortunate enough to buy a car. I had one in the US so why not in Germany. From then on I spent any extra money on travel.

I drove to London via ferry, Athens via Yugoslavia, drove to many ski slopes in Germany and Austria. I visited Berlin twice to see friends, once by duty train and once by plane. I visited, what is now, 21 countries while living in Germany those three years.

I could never had done these things without being an Army Brat. Being a Brat has made me what I am today. I am definitely a better person and more successful today than i would have been without the experience. Thank you US Army.

The dreaded question...Where are you from?

Near Cincinnati (12yrs), Lawton, Oklahoma (35yrs total), Near Dallas TX (28yrs))

Do you have a favorite place where you ever lived? What made it special to you?

Munich, Germany: I had a job, went to two years of college with very interesting professors, & traveled extensively. I was living a dream. I would not trade those years for anything.

Have you been back to visit any place you lived growing up overseas?

I made it to Munich after touring the Normandy beaches on June 6, 2019.
I got to see one of the apartment buildings we lived in, McGraw Kaserne where U of M was, and another housing area. Of course I visited several beer halls that I frequented back in "the day".

My dad had been transferred to Munich soon after I started college. I had more freedom living at home than I did in the dorm. We lived in three different places (not counting the dorm or my room on the economy, short stay) as a family while there. I lived in the Dixon Dorm for a few weeks then got a room near McGraw before the family moved to Munich.

Did you live (not just visit) in...

Europe
